Short answer: gold is the main currency in every version of World of Warcraft, and each version runs its own separate economy. You can earn it by playing (quests, gathering, crafting and the auction house), get it through the WoW Token on the versions that support it, or buy it from a third-party seller. Buying is fast, but it isn't risk-free: Blizzard's rules are against real money trading, so pick a seller that trades by hand, never asks for your login, and backs its orders with a written refund policy. This guide walks through all three routes so you can pick the one that fits your time and budget.

What's in this guide

What WoW gold is used for

Almost everything you do in Azeroth costs some gold, and the bigger your goals, the more it matters. The exact prices change with every patch and every version, but the spending categories stay much the same:

  • Gear and upgrades. Crafted gear, enchants, gems and other upgrades are usually bought from other players on the auction house or through crafting orders. Early in a new patch or phase, when demand is highest, these are among the most expensive things in the game.
  • Consumables. Flasks, potions, food and other temporary buffs are used up every raid night or dungeon run, so they're a steady, repeating cost for anyone pushing harder content.
  • Repairs and travel. Every death wears down your gear, and flight paths, training and reagents all cost money. On their own these are small, but they add up over a season.
  • Mounts and collections. Vendor mounts, riding training in the Classic versions, transmog appearances, pets and toys can be serious gold sinks, especially for collectors.
  • Professions. Leveling a crafting profession means buying materials, and the profit only comes once you can make things other players want.
  • Services from other players. Many players spend gold on crafting orders, boosts or carries sold in-game for gold. Check the current rules for your version before paying anyone for a service.
  • Game time, on some versions. Where the WoW Token is available, gold can be turned into subscription time. More on that below.

The common thread: gold lets you trade time for progress. A player with gold can skip the slow parts of gearing up, while a player without it has to farm those materials and items themselves.

How the economy differs between versions

Blizzard now runs several versions of WoW side by side, and they don't share gold. Gold earned on a Retail character can't be moved to a Classic Era character, and a Classic Era realm has a completely separate auction house from a Mists of Pandaria Classic realm. US and EU regions are separate too. That's why prices, supply and the best ways to make gold vary so much from one version to the next. Here's how they compare at the time of writing.

World of Warcraft Classic EraThe original game, kept as a permanent versionNo

Token availability is based on Blizzard's support pages and the WoW Token article on warcraft.wiki.gg as of October 2026. Blizzard can add or change it at any time, so the in-game Shop for your version is always the final word.

Retail: World of Warcraft: Midnight

Retail has the largest economy and the most ways to make gold. Since patch 9.2.7, commodities (stackable items such as herbs, ore, gems, flasks and other consumables) trade on a single region-wide auction house, while gear and other non-commodity items are still listed per realm. In practice that means crafting materials have one shared price across the whole US or EU region, so you can't find a cheap market on a quiet realm for those. Retail also has the WoW Token, which ties the gold price of game time to real-world demand. Because so much gold circulates on Retail, the amounts involved are much larger than in any Classic version.

Classic Era

Classic Era is the original game, frozen as a permanent version. Gold is much scarcer than in Retail, so smaller amounts matter more: things like a first riding skill or a profession's key recipes can take a long time to save for. Auction houses are tied to your realm rather than the whole region, so prices can differ noticeably between realms. There's no WoW Token here.

Classic Hardcore

Hardcore uses the Classic Era rules, but a character that dies can't keep playing on Hardcore. The economy works much like Classic Era, with one difference that matters for gold: every death takes that character's gold and gear out of the Hardcore economy, and many players avoid the most dangerous farming spots. Hardcore also has an optional Self-Found mode chosen at character creation. Blizzard's support site says Self-Found characters can't trade with other players, use player mail or use the auction house, so a Self-Found character can't receive gold from anyone, including a seller.

Season of Discovery

Season of Discovery is a seasonal take on Classic with new abilities, raids and content released in phases. New phases tend to reset demand: when new content opens, the materials and consumables it needs jump in price, and they settle down as more players farm them. If you sell materials, being early to a new phase is the best time; if you buy, waiting a few weeks often pays off. No WoW Token.

Mists of Pandaria Classic

Mists of Pandaria Classic is where the Classic progression realms have moved after Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm Classic. These realms have the WoW Token, but on Classic progression realms it can only be redeemed for game time, not Battle.net Balance. With characters carried over from earlier expansions, the economy is more mature than on fresh Classic-style realms, and professions and daily content are the backbone of most gold plans.

Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary

The Anniversary realms started fresh in Classic and moved into The Burning Crusade in February 2026. Outland brings new professions content, daily quests and gear, and with that a big jump in what players earn and spend compared to the original game. These realms have no WoW Token outside China, so every gold coin in the economy comes from players playing the game.

World of Warcraft: Forever

World of Warcraft: Forever was announced at BlizzCon 2026 as a new permanent version of the game. It stays at level 60, adds new zones, quests, dungeons and raids, and launches on November 4, 2026, after a beta that opened in September. Since it's brand new, its economy will start from zero: early prices are usually high and unstable, and they settle as the first wave of players builds up stock. Blizzard hasn't said everything about how its economy will work yet, so check in game for details such as the WoW Token.

Ways to make gold

The specific best farms change every patch, but the methods behind them are the same in every version. These are the main ones, roughly in the order most players use them as they build up gold.

Questing and repeatable content

Quests pay gold directly and give items you can sell. Daily quests (in the versions that have them), world quests in Retail, and other repeatable weekly content are a reliable income with no starting money needed. It's slow per hour, but it's the best way to build the starting money that the other methods need.

Gathering professions

Herbalism, Mining and Skinning cost nothing but your time, and their materials always sell because crafters need them. Gathering is the most beginner-friendly way to make a steady profit, and in the Classic versions it's often the backbone of a whole gold plan.

Crafting professions

Crafting turns cheaper materials into finished goods: consumables, gear, enchants and gems. The profit is the gap between what the materials cost and what the result sells for, so it pays to check prices before you craft instead of crafting first and hoping it sells.

Farming mobs, dungeons and raids

Many enemies drop items and materials that sell well, and older dungeons and raids can be cleared quickly for their sellable loot and transmog items. Results vary a lot by version and by what's in demand that week.

Trading on the auction house

Buying underpriced items and selling them at the normal market price can be the fastest method once you have money to work with and know your market. It also carries the most risk: prices can drop while you're holding stock, and every listing that doesn't sell still costs you time.

Version-specific gold farming guides

For specific methods and step-by-step tips, see our guides for each version:

The WoW Token

The WoW Token is Blizzard's official way to exchange real money and gold. One player buys a token for real money in the in-game Shop and lists it on the auction house; another player buys it with gold and redeems it. Here's how it works, based on Blizzard's support pages and the warcraft.wiki.gg summary:

  • Buying with money: tokens are sold in the in-game Shop for real money. The cash price is set by Blizzard for each region.
  • Selling for gold: you list the token on the auction house. Its gold price isn't set by you; it changes over time with supply and demand, and every token in a region has the same price at any given moment.
  • Redeeming: a token bought with gold can be redeemed for 30 days of game time. On Retail, it can also be redeemed for Battle.net Balance in supported regions. On Classic progression realms it's game time only.
  • No reselling: once you buy a token with gold it can't be put back on the auction house.
  • Not every version has it: see the table above. Classic Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery and the Anniversary realms (outside China) don't have the token.

The token is the only way to turn money into gold that Blizzard allows, which is its biggest advantage. The trade-off is price: the token's gold price follows the market, so how much gold you get per dollar moves up and down, and on versions without a token it isn't an option at all. To see how much gold a token is worth right now, or how many tokens you'd need for a given amount of gold, use our free WoW Token price calculator.

Buying gold: delivery, price and safety

If you don't have time to farm and the token isn't available or isn't good value for you, buying gold from a third-party seller is the other option. Before you do, know that it isn't allowed by Blizzard's rules: the publisher's rules are against real money trading, and when the publisher acts it may remove the gold, suspend the account for a period, or in serious or repeated cases close it for good. In our experience over the years, bans and gold takebacks have been rare for customers who follow our safety tips, but no seller can make buying gold completely risk-free. Here's what to look at if you decide to buy.

How the gold reaches you

Gold is handed over in game, using the same tools players use to trade with each other. These are the four delivery methods we use; which ones are available depends on the game and is shown at checkout:

  • Face to Face: our trader meets your character in game and trades the gold directly. Most orders arrive within 1-30 minutes of payment. Always double-check the trader's exact character name.
  • Mail: the gold is sent to your character through the in-game mail. Hands-off, but it takes about 1 extra hour because of how the game's mail works.
  • Guild: our trader deposits the gold into the guild you specify. Same 1-30 minute timing as Face to Face.
  • Auction House Buyout: you list items on the auction house at the price shown on the order page and we buy them out. You never trade directly with our trader, which makes this the safest method. It takes about 1 extra hour, and the auction house charges its own fee, paid by you.

Ranked from safest to least safe by how little direct contact each one needs: Auction House Buyout, Guild, Mail, then Face to Face. See Delivery Methods for the full details and which games support each one.

What gold costs

Gold prices depend on the version, the region and sometimes the realm. Gold is cheaper per coin where more of it circulates (Retail) and dearer where it's scarce (the Classic versions), and prices move with new patches, phases and launches. A brand-new version like World of Warcraft: Forever usually starts expensive and gets cheaper as supply grows. Our live prices are on each game's gold page, and our WoW gold price page tracks them by version and region. The price on the order form is what you pay, with no hidden fees added after checkout. For why our prices are where they are, see Why is it cheap?.

One warning about price: a price that's far below what everyone else charges is a red flag, not a bargain. Very cheap gold can come from hacked accounts or bot farms, which are the gold most likely to be taken back. Our guide to picking a WoW gold seller covers the other warning signs.

Staying safe

Most of the risk in buying gold is something you can control. These are the tips we give every customer:

  • Never give anyone your account password. A legitimate seller only needs your character name and realm. No seller should ever ask to log in to your account.
  • Pay through a protected payment method, such as a card processed by Stripe, rather than entering your card details on a site you don't know.
  • Never return gold after a trade. Our trader will never ask you to give gold back for any reason. Anyone who does is a scammer; see Scam alerts.
  • Don't talk about buying or selling gold in game, whether in chat, whispers or with the trader.
  • Only pay on the seller's own website. We only take payment through this website. Never pay anyone in game or on another site claiming to be us.
  • Read the refund policy before you pay. Know what happens if delivery is late or if the gold is taken back.

Our own policy: you can get a refund at any time before your order is delivered, and if it's partly delivered we refund the undelivered part. If the publisher takes back gold we delivered, we'll resend it or refund the amount removed, your choice, as long as you send us the notice within 7 days. We can't compensate for account suspensions or bans, so please only buy if you accept that risk. Read the details on Is buying WoW gold safe? and our Refund Policy.

Protecting the gold you already have

However you get your gold, the biggest threat to it usually isn't the game's rules: it's someone else getting into your account. Compromised accounts are often emptied of gold and sellable items. A few habits make that much less likely:

  • Turn on two-factor authentication for your Battle.net account with the Battle.net Authenticator app. It's free, and it stops most password-only break-ins.
  • Use a unique password for Battle.net that you don't use anywhere else, and change it if you ever typed it on a page you're not sure about.
  • Be careful with links. Fake "account suspended" emails, fake giveaways and fake login pages are common. Go to Blizzard's site yourself instead of clicking a link in a whisper or email.
  • Only install addons from sources you trust, and keep your PC's security software up to date.
  • Don't share accounts, even with friends or guildmates. Anything that happens on your account is your responsibility.

These are the same habits that protect you when you trade with other players, whether you're selling materials on the auction house or handing gold to a guildmate.

Farm, Token or buy: how to choose

There's no single right answer. It comes down to how much time you have, which version you play and how much risk you accept.

  • Farm it yourself if you enjoy the game's economy or have time to spare. It costs nothing and carries no account risk, and the skills you learn keep paying off.
  • Use the WoW Token if you play Retail or Mists of Pandaria Classic and want gold without breaking any rules. Check the calculator first to see how much gold it gets you today.
  • Buy from a seller if you're short on time, play a version without the token, or need a specific amount right now, and you accept the account risk that comes with it. Choose a seller with a clear refund policy and in-game delivery, and follow the safety tips above.

Many players mix all three: farm what they enjoy, use the token for game time, and buy only when a big purchase like an expensive mount or an early-phase gear upgrade would otherwise take weeks to save for.
