Short answer: in Classic Era, gold comes from raid consumables. Herbalism with Alchemy, plus farming the elemental materials and rare leathers raiders need, is the most dependable route. While leveling, pick up a gathering profession and sell what you find; at level 60, solo or duo dungeon farms and transmute cooldowns add on top. On Hardcore realms, the same methods work, but every risk you take with your character is permanent.
How the Classic Era economy works
Classic Era is the original game at level 60 with all of its content open. Gold is scarce compared with later expansions, so even small amounts matter: your first mount, class training, and repairs eat most of what you earn while leveling. At 60, the biggest steady demand comes from raiders, who need flasks, potions, protection potions, and enchants every week. The players who supply those consumables, or their materials, make the most consistent gold.
What to farm while leveling
Gathering pays from the first level. Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning cost nothing to learn and everything they collect sells to someone. Beyond that, some mobs drop materials worth farming at the right level:
- Elemental Fire (from level 23 or so): fire elementals such as the Burning Exiles in Arathi Highlands and Burning Ravagers in Stonetalon Mountains. Raiders need it for Greater Fire Protection Potions.
- Elemental Earth and Water: earth elementals in Hillsbrad Foothills, Badlands, and Thousand Needles; water elementals in Stranglethorn Vale, Thousand Needles, and Feralas.
- Whelp drops: red whelps in the Wetlands and the whelps of Swamp of Sorrows, Dustwallow Marsh, and Badlands drop crafting materials and very rare whelpling pets.
- Golden Pearls (41+): Big-mouth Clams from the Hatecrest naga in Feralas can contain Golden Pearls, used in high-end enchanting.
- Felcloth (50+): sells to tailors for Mooncloth and warlock gear.
Also vendor everything gray, keep your quest log full of quests you can actually finish, and don't buy gear from the auction house that you'll replace in a few levels.
Level 60 farms
Open-world materials
- Devilsaur Leather: skinned from Devilsaurs in Un'Goro Crater and used for Devilsaur Gauntlets and Leggings. It's valuable, but the Devilsaurs have few spawn points and are heavily camped on busy realms.
- Essence of Water: water elementals and abominations in the Eastern Plaguelands.
- Essence of Earth: the Greater Obsidian Elementals of Burning Steppes and the Desert Ragers of Silithus. Essence of Fire, used in Enchant Weapon - Fiery Weapon, is another high-value elemental drop.
- Essence of Air: the wind elementals of Silithus, used in agility enchants.
- Winterfall Firewater: the Winterfall furbolgs of Winterspring drop this popular melee buff consumable.
- Larval Acid: the carrion grubs and devourers of the Eastern Plaguelands, used in the threat glove enchant.
- Black Lotus: the most expensive herb in the game, needed for every flask. It spawns in a handful of high-level zones and is heavily contested.
Dungeon farms
Many classes can solo or duo older dungeons for gold. Well-known examples include Dire Maul tribute runs, the lashers of Dire Maul East for herbalists, Blackrock Depths runs for Dark Iron Ore and drops, Maraudon runs for Ghost Mushrooms, and pickpocketing low-level dungeons as a rogue. Which ones you can do safely depends on your class and gear: hunters, mages, and warlocks have the widest choice. Remember that you can only enter a limited number of instances per hour, so a farm that is fast to clear is not always the most gold per hour.
Professions: what to pick
- Herbalism + Alchemy: the strongest gold pairing in Classic. Flask of the Titans, Flask of Supreme Power, Flask of Distilled Wisdom, Elixir of the Mongoose, Greater Arcane Elixir, Major Mana Potions, and the protection potions sell every raid week. Alchemists also have transmutes: Transmute: Arcanite (a Thorium Bar and an Arcane Crystal into an Arcanite Bar) on a two-day cooldown, and Essence of Undeath into Essence of Water on a one-day cooldown.
- Mining: mine every node; Thorium veins can also yield Arcane Crystals for Arcanite.
- Skinning: Devilsaur Leather, the dragonscales, and Core Leather from Molten Core are the valuable ones, but skin everything you kill.
- Tailoring: Felcloth into Mooncloth on a four-day cooldown at a moonwell, plus bags; most other Tailoring gold depends on rare patterns.
- Enchanting: profitable with rare raid-drop formulas, but you'll be advertising in trade chat. Even without them, an enchanter bank alt lets you disenchant unsellable greens and sell the materials instead.
- Blacksmithing and Leatherworking: make good money mainly with rare recipes, such as pre-raid best-in-slot items and resistance gear.
- Engineering: fantastic for PvP and raids but generally a gold sink, not a gold maker.
- Fishing: a secondary profession worth having, especially paired with Alchemy and Cooking. Stonescale Eels, for example, are used in Elixir of Superior Defense.
Auction house tips for Classic
- Sell before raid nights. Raid consumables and their materials are worth the most just before the days when guilds raid. Buy your materials on quieter days.
- Mind the deposit. Listing items on the auction house costs a deposit that you lose if they don't sell, so don't list items nobody is buying. Enchanting materials are cheap to list, which is another reason to disenchant unsellable greens.
- Don't undercut by a lot. Undercutting by a copper or a silver is enough; big undercuts only drag down the price you will get next time.
- Use a price addon. An auction addon that remembers past prices makes it much easier to spot an underpriced listing or a bad sale.
Hardcore realms
Hardcore realms run Classic Era rules with one big difference: death is permanent on that realm, and you can't be resurrected by any spell or ability. A dead character can move to a normal Classic Era realm, but can't return. Blizzard also put a 24-hour lockout on almost every dungeon for characters below level 60, so the "reset and farm" dungeon routines above are a level-60 activity on Hardcore.
That changes how you farm. Low-risk methods (gathering, safe elemental camps, fishing, and crafting) are worth more on Hardcore than on a normal realm, because a single bad pull can cost you the character and everything in its bags. Avoid contested elite areas while under-geared, keep an escape plan for every farm, and be cautious with anything that relies on aggro tricks or pulling large groups. The Hardcore auction house is its own economy, so check local prices rather than assuming they match a normal Era realm.
A note on Season of Discovery
Season of Discovery realms remain online, but Blizzard has stopped adding new content phases to them. Its economy is separate from Classic Era and Hardcore, and its rune system and level-60 content create different demand, so the level-based tips above apply only loosely. If you play there, check its own auction house before farming anything.
Common beginner mistakes
- Buying leveling gear on the auction house instead of saving for your mount and training.
- Selling raw materials at the bottom of the market instead of waiting for raid days.
- Ignoring transmute and Mooncloth cooldowns.
- Camping one contested spot (like the Devilsaurs) for hours instead of moving to an uncontested farm.
- On Hardcore, taking a risky farm to save a few minutes.
Time vs. reward
Gold per hour in Classic Era swings a lot between realms, factions, and the time of day, so we don't publish fixed numbers. In general, high-value rare materials pay best when you can actually get them, consumable crafting pays steadily but needs capital, and simple gathering is slow but safe, which matters most on Hardcore.
A useful habit is to note, for a week or two, what each farm actually earned you and how long it took, including the time spent selling. Most players find that one or two routines carry most of their income. Prices also shift over time on a realm, so a farm that was poor last month can become worth doing again when supply dries up.
Quick reference: pick a method for your situation
- Leveling with no gold: take Skinning plus Herbalism or Mining, vendor grays, and sell elemental materials and cloth as you go. Save for your mount before anything else.
- Fresh 60: farm elementals and essences in Eastern Plaguelands, Burning Steppes, or Silithus; they need no capital and sell to raiders every week.
- Class that solos dungeons well: learn one dungeon farm that suits your class and gear, and stick to it.
- Herbalist-alchemist: craft flasks and protection potions for raid nights and keep your transmute on cooldown.
- Hardcore player: gathering, fishing, and crafting first; dungeon farms only when you are geared and confident.
- Very little playtime: a quick gathering loop and one auction house check a day is slow but steady, and safe.
