Why WoW gold prices differ so much between versions

Gold in World of Warcraft is not one market. Every version, and every region inside it, has its own economy, so the same 1,000 gold can cost a few cents in one place and several dollars in another. Three things drive most of the difference.

  • Supply and demand. In Retail, players earn large amounts of gold from quests, world content, professions and selling items, and that gold piles up. In the Classic versions gold is earned much more slowly, so each coin is worth far more. Demand matters too: when a lot of players want gold at once, for example to buy mounts, gear or consumables, prices go up until supply catches up.
  • How old the version is. On fresh realms and new versions very little gold exists yet, while demand for epic mounts, profession training and raid consumables is high, so gold is expensive. As a version ages, more gold circulates and the price per 1,000 usually comes down. Big patches and new phases can push it back up for a while.
  • Region, realm and faction. US and EU realms have separate economies, so their prices differ even for the same version. In the Classic versions every realm (and often each faction on a realm) is its own market: a busy realm with many sellers can be much cheaper than a quiet one. Retail is the exception: we sell it at one price for all realms in a region.

That is why the table shows both the lowest and the median price. The lowest price tells you what the cheapest realm in stock costs; the median tells you what a typical realm costs. If the two are far apart, prices on that version vary a lot from realm to realm.

How our prices are calculated

Every price on this site is built the same way. We start from the price we pay our suppliers for gold on that realm, the farmers who deliver your order, and add our service fee. That is the price shown in the table and on each gold page. For Retail US and EU there is one price for all realms; for the other versions the price is set per realm, from the supplier prices for that realm.

The payment processing fee is added on the order form and depends on how you pay. Card payments include the card processing fee, and card fees can include a small fixed amount per order, so a very small card order can cost a little more per 1,000 gold than a large one. The price on the order form is the price you pay, with no fees added after checkout. You can read more about where our prices come from in why WoW gold is so cheap here.

How often prices update

Supplier prices and stock are refreshed automatically about every 10 minutes, and currency exchange rates about every 30 minutes. This page reuses its numbers for up to 5 minutes so it loads quickly, and the "Last updated" time under the table shows when they were calculated. Retail US and EU prices are set directly and change less often. The WoW Token comparison uses the latest token price we have, which normally updates several times an hour. The order form always shows the current price for the exact realm and amount you choose.

How to find the cheapest realm

  1. Find your version and region in the table and open its gold page.
  2. For Classic versions, the gold page lists the most popular realms with their prices and stock, and the stock page lists every realm we cover.
  3. Pick the realm and faction your character actually plays on. Gold is delivered in game on that realm, so a cheaper realm only helps if you have a character there.
  4. Check the stock. If your realm is out of stock, the realm's gold page suggests other realms that have gold ready right now.
  5. Choose how to receive your gold. Face to face and guild delivery are the fastest; mail and auction house buyout take about an hour longer. See delivery methods for how each one works.
